If San Diego State’s leadership is serious about the Qualcomm site becoming “SDSU West,” the next step should be to hire a point person.

The best candidate is already on the Montezuma campus. And — how’s this for red-and-black kismet — his schedule just came open.

Steve Fisher, the longtime Aztecs basketball coach who announced his retirement this week, would be the perfect choice.

Fisher connects with San Diegans as few leaders have. Wise, decent and nimble, he’s also tough. He’d have the spine to stand up to powerful locals who have commercial, housing-dense ideas for the some 230 acres in east Mission Valley and south Kearny Mesa.
